I Will Trust

It seems to me that there was an old television program called "Who do you trust?" (Something from the early days of learning English grammar makes me think it should have been "whom do you trust?") Anyway! We get the idea! That's today's question.

This morning Tom is going to guide us through the crucial first step in "beginning a new life on loan." All year long we are talking about living our lives on loan, and our focus is on these few years (even if they should become a hundred they are few). But now, in the middle of the year, we want to interrupt that significant examination to address the more important piece. What about the new life (which actually is not a loan but a gift)? This eternal piece starts when we surrender ourselves to the care and keeping of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, the Son of God, who was thirty years as the man Jesus, and who has always been the eternal Christ. We spend some of these loaned years, then, in the new life, which gets perfect when this loaned piece is finished.

Today's urgent call is to faith, trust. Not the kind of faith that is a wistful plea floated on the outside chance that it will be granted! Not some kind of "maybe" that involves keeping our fingers crossed! Not just some kind of passionate feeling that sweeps over me, leads to a warm heart, and passes! Not just a position taken in my mind! But a surrender! Just who will be the one in whom I put my trust, whose instruction I will follow, whose wishes will become my wishes, the one in whose hands I place my life and my destiny?

Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father but by me." That's the one whom I will trust.
