Be Salty
There's something about salt, and something about light, that we don't think about very much. And that is that we don't think about them very much. When they do their job well they don't call much attention to themselves. They just make a difference. Almost anonymously!
On a bright, sunny morning we stand at the window and think "boy the sunshine is wonderful." But within seconds we forget about the sun and begin thinking about the trees, and grass, and flowers; and that it is almost as though the world is smiling. What light does impresses us more than what it is.
When it falls out of the shaker we think about the salt — for a moment. Then it almost disappears into the vegetables, or the eggs, or the hamburger. Unless we have poured it on we tend to forget about it. A few years ago I was startled by a glass of V8 juice, which I really like. In an attempt to have us take a healthier approach to some things, Judy bought some V8 without salt. It was awful. I discovered that it was the salt that I liked — at least the salted vegetable juice.
That's what salty Christians do, and carriers of the light. They are effective when they call very little attention to themselves. They just make a difference. They brighten lives. They lift spirits. They enhance taste. They arrest decay. They warm hearts. They awaken hope, and joy.
